GHSA Names Jonathan Adkins Executive Director

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Governors Highway Safety Association Chairman Kendell Poole announced today that Jonathan Adkins has been selected as the organization’s new executive director. Adkins has been with GHSA for 14 years, serving first as communications director and most recently as deputy executive director. He has been managing GHSA’s D.C. office since July, following the retirement of GHSA’s longtime executive director, Barbara Harsha.

“Jonathan has been an important factor in GHSA’s success over the last decade,” said Poole. “He has the vision and ability to lead GHSA into the future, as we face critical issues such as the reauthorization of federal highway safety programs, new challenges and opportunities in highway safety posed by advances in mobile and in-vehicle technology and other emerging issues, such as drugged driving.”

Adkins’ selection is the culmination of a rigorous and extensive nationwide search process that began with in-depth discussions about the organization and included input from the organization’s Executive Board, other leaders and key stakeholders. These discussions resulted in a detailed profile that outlined the qualifications, experience, background and personal characteristics that the organization was seeking in its executive director. Based on that information and consensus, more than 100 candidates were considered and more than 60 interviews were conducted, including extensive in-person interviews with six finalists by the search committee and a detailed vetting process.

“Jonathan’s leadership in developing GHSA’s important partnerships with the Ford Motor Company Fund, The Allstate Foundation and State Farm, and his skill at relationship-building and experience with legislative policies and processes are the perfect match to continue our successes in helping states move toward zero deaths on the nation’s roadways,” Poole noted.

As Executive Director, Adkins will be responsible for leading GHSA’s Washington headquarters office, serving as the association’s chief liaison with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and other federal agencies, as well as representing the organization on Capitol Hill and with private sector partners.
