The American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) has recently published several new highway safety guidebooks, covering the following topics:
- Reducing Work Zone Collisions
- Collisions Involving Bicycles
- Reducing Head-on Crashes
- Collecting & Analyzing Data
AASHTO has partnered with the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), GHSA and the U.S. Department of Transportation to develop these guidebooks as part of the NCHRP Series 500: Guidance for Implementation of the AASHTO Strategic Highway Safety Plan. There are separate guidebooks corresponding with each of the 22 AASHTO Strategic Highway Safety Plan emphasis areas, as well as an additional guidebook on data collection and analysis.
Each guidebook includes a brief introduction, a general description of the problem, strategies and countermeasures, and a model implementation process. The next, and final, guidebooks to be released will be on the topics of Reducing Motorcycle Collisions and on Reducing Speeding-Related Crashes.
