Section 2010 Motorcyclist Safety Grants

All State Highway Safety Grant Programs

History and Administration

The Section 2010 Motorcyclist Safety Grants program was authorized under SAFETEA-LU. It was administered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) at the federal level and the State Highway Safety Offices (SHSOs) at the state level.

Under MAP-21 (Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century, this program was replaced by Section 405(e) of the Section 405 National Priority Safety Program.

Purpose

This program provided grants to states that adopted and implemented effective programs to reduce the number of crashes involving motorcyclists.

Requirements

A state was eligible for a grant if it satisfied at least one of the following six programmatic criteria in FY 2006 and at least two in FY 2007 - FY 2009 (and beyond):

The state also must have satisfied a maintenance of effort requirement.

Grant funds were able to be sub-allocated to nonprofits. Funds could have been used for motorcycle training and education purposes.

Funding

Eligible states received grants of at least $100,000 but not more than 25% of their FY 2003 Section 402 apportionment. The federal share was 75% in FY 2006 - FY 2008 and 50% in FY 2009 (and beyond).

SAFETEA-LU authorized the Section 2010 program at $6 million each year for FY 2006 - FY 2008 and at $7 million for FY 2009 (and beyond).

Total dollar amounts allocated are shown below. Click on a column header to see all federal highway safety funding for that fiscal year.
