Overview

The Senior Director of Policy and Government Relations is responsible for federal advocacy activities in support of GHSA’s policy objectives while working with the GHSA CEO on the management of a range of highway safety initiatives. The position works closely with agencies in the executive branch, U.S. Congress, and its State members to represent GHSA positions, advance GHSA objectives and support member programs. This position also supports some GHSA programs, projects and member services, and represents the association in a variety of external capacities.

The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) is seeking a full-time Senior Staff Accountant. This individual will be responsible for providing operational support for GHSA’s financial, operational, and accounting activities. The Senior Staff Accountant interacts with all organizational levels, internal and external to GHSA, and collaborates with GHSA’s leadership team to ensure business success and execution of GHSA’s Mission and Vision. There are two new mobile traffic safety devices that will be used to detect distracted driving and flash a warning to drivers in D.C. The devices consist of electronic signs mounted on small trailers and equipped with laser scanners capable of discerning whether a cellphone is in the hand of a driver and whether a driver’s eyes are fixed on the road ahead. The devices are similar to electronic sign boards that detect a vehicle’s speed and flash a warning message to the driver to slow down.

Summary

Safe Kids Worldwide (Safe Kids) is a nonprofit dedicated to protecting kids from preventable injuries, the number one cause of death for children in the United States. Safe Kids is a separate 501(c)(3) and an affiliate of Children's National Hospital. Safe Kids is a go-to resource to help parents and caregivers keep kids safe from car crashes, fires, falls, poisoning, and more.

Atlanta, Denver, Indianapolis, Washington, DC, Raleigh, North Carolina, and other major cities have recently proposed or passed laws banning it in parts of their busy downtowns or citywide. They believe it will protect people walking and biking amid the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in more than 40 years. Right turns on red “introduce extra movements into the intersection,” said Eric Dumbaugh, a professor in the department of urban and regional planning at Florida Atlantic University who studies traffic safety.

The US Governors Highway Safety Association has awarded two grants - of $87,500 each - to help reduce distracted driving in the District of Columbia and Washington state. Partnering with General Motors (GM), GHSA is awarding the money to the state highway safety office in DC and Washington to create and evaluate local distracted driving prevention programmes. Last year, the organisations awarded $210,000 in grants to seven SHSOs.

GHSA and General Motors (GM) are advancing their work together to end the persistent and deadly problem of distracted driving by supporting innovative new ways to address this dangerous behavior. GHSA is awarding two grants to create and evaluate local distracted driving prevention programs in the District of Columbia and Washington state. A third grant is supporting youth journalists in diverse and underserved communities who will highlight how distracted driving endangers everyone on the road.
