Lifting Up a Safe System Approach in State Highway Safety Offices: North Carolina's Vision Zero Community Collaborative
Resource Type

Getting to zero deaths on our nation’s roadways requires the participation of a diverse group of stakeholders. North Carolina’s Vision Zero Community Collaborative brings together diverse stakeholders to create safer streets through innovative, multi-sector partnerships. This webinar featured a discussion of why this collaborative exists, the key role it plays in advancing Safe System efforts, and how it can be used as a model for similar efforts in other states.

The Vision Zero Community Collaborative was launched in 2017, funded by the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP). In 2019, it was split into two projects: Community Engagement and Analytics. The community engagement activities are led by the University of North Carolina Injury Prevention Resource Center. Today, there are approximately 29 communities across North Carolina engaged at some level with the Vision Zero Community Collaborative.

The Collaborative support model includes monthly peer-to-peer community meetings, quarterly "all hands" meetings, an annual 2.5-day Leadership Institute funded by GHSP and a Statewide Task Force to mobilize efforts and resources to support Vision Zero communities across the state.

Panelists discussed how the Collaborative can be a model for other states, the types of support that the UNC team provides to communities across the state, strategies for increasing public participation in community Vision Zero efforts, other successful Vision Zero programs across the country and how states can get started building their own program. A recording of the webinar is embedded below, as well as the presentation slides and additional resources shared by the panelists during the webinar.
