Amid record boom in package deliveries, GHSA and Amazon share safety tips with drivers, remind everyone to do their part to make roads safer
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Want to ensure your delivery makes it to your door safely and on time this holiday season? As we go into the busiest shopping and delivery season of the year, Amazon is partnering with the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) to promote safe driving.
The average American consumer is expected to spend more than $1,000 on gifts this holiday season, up 10% from the year before, according to Gallup. Most Americans (84%) say they’ll buy at least some gifts online, and 12% will do all their shopping this way. Amazon delivers more than 20 million packages a day worldwide and countless companies deliver millions more.
Amazon and GHSA developed a digital safety tip card for all delivery drivers, to help them keep safe while delivering packages on the road. The card emphasizes three key tips:
- Slow down, especially in residential areas.
- Avoid distracted driving.
- Remain vigilant for pedestrians and delivery personnel.
“This holiday season, and throughout the year, we urge all drivers to prioritize safe driving. The true spirit of the holidays lies in cherishing moments with loved ones, and by taking extra precaution, we can all help ensure joyful celebrations for everyone,” said Sarah Rhoads, Amazon VP of Global Workplace Health and Safety.
GHSA Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Adkins added, “Holiday deliveries don't magically arrive at our doorstep. Small actions – like slowing down and moving over for stopped delivery vehicles – can make a huge difference in ensuring the safety of the hard-working folks who are delivering joy to you and your loved ones this holiday season.”
While Amazon provides safety training for all of its Delivery Service Partners (DSPs) – the small business delivery companies that deliver packages on behalf of Amazon – consumers can also play a role from the comfort of their own home by ensuring their driveways and sidewalks are clear of ice and snow, turning on outdoor lights and keeping dogs inside.
