In 1985, Safer New Mexico Now was founded by H.J. "Doc" and Lena Weiler after their son Jeff was killed in an unbelted automobile crash. Both Doc and Lena's life-long work was to leave New Mexico a better place for us all. From that grief, Doc and Lena were optimistic and hopeful of making improvements to traffic safety and Safer New Mexico Now, a 501(c)(3)was formed. Since the inception, Safer New Mexico Now has worked in cooperation with the New Mexico Department of Transportation Traffic Safety Division to provide statewide coordination of traffic safety initiatives. Our program includes Law Enforcement Training, serving as a liaison between Law Enforcement Agencies and the New Mexico Transportation Safety Division, DWI prevention, Occupant Protection, and also managing the statewide Injury Prevention Resource Center.
