GHSA Annual Meeting highlights new partnerships, diverse communities, innovative technologies working to improve roadway safety

INDIANAPOLIS – The nation’s top roadway safety leaders will come together for the Governors Highway Safety Association’s (GHSA) 2024 Annual Meeting, “Traffic Safety at a Crossroads: Charting a Course for Success,” September 7-11 in Indianapolis. The meeting, hosted by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, comes at a critical juncture in roadway safety, as traffic deaths have finally started to fall after surging the first few years of the pandemic. With more than 800 people already registered, this will be one of GHSA’s best-attended conferences in its 57-year history.

The GHSA 2024 Annual Meeting is focused on collaboration and creativity as we work together to reach the goal of zero traffic deaths. To build on recent safety momentum, State Highway Safety Offices are bringing new partners and diverse voices into the traffic safety dialogue, companies are providing new data sources and technologies that are improving roadway safety, and communities across the country are addressing dangerous driving and using additional resources to make their streets safer for everyone.

GHSA’s 2024 Annual Meeting will feature 17 workshops covering a wide range of safety issues that will both educate and engage, including an interactive trivia show during a session on roadway safety communications. Attendees at a workshop on public participation and engagement won’t just hear best practices, they’ll actively participate by brainstorming solutions and building a framework to share with others. Separately, law enforcement leaders will have a candid discussion with the audience about equitable service, creating space for a frank conversation about this critical topic. Another session will let safety practitioners showcase unique ways to engage underserved youth in safe walking, biking and scooting.

General sessions will feature national safety experts discussing the future of traffic safety and how to break down silos between elements of the holistic Safe System approach. The conference will close out on Wednesday, September 11 with a performance from Mark Schulman, former drummer for P!nk, Foreigner, Cher, Billy Idol and more, who will motivate and inspire attendees in their life-saving work with a unique presentation.

The Exhibit Hall is the largest ever at a GHSA Annual Meeting, with nearly 60 companies and organizations on hand to showcase new technologies, products and services that are making roads safer by addressing impaired driving, speeding, child passenger safety, distracted driving and other critical issues. As the safety community seeks new partnerships, new data and new ways of thinking, the Exhibit Hall will serve as a hub of innovation to connect business, government, law enforcement and community leaders dedicated to improving roadway safety.

In addition, several special guests will help spread the safety message at the Annual Meeting. NASCAR Driver and seat belt advocate Ross Chastain will attend the Taste of the State reception at the Indiana State Museum on Tuesday, September 10 and can discuss opportunities for states to partner on his “Protect Your Melon” seat belt safety campaign. IndyCar Driver Sting Ray Robb will be at the Alliance Highway Safety booth in the Exhibit Hall to take photos with attendees and sign autographs on Monday, September 9.

GHSA’s Annual Meeting is supported by almost 50 national organizations committed to improving traffic safety, including Abbott, Alliance Highway Safety, Altumint, Amazon, Cambridge Mobile Telematics, Ford Philanthropy, General Motors, HAAS Alert, Hyundai, Intoxalock, LexisNexis Coplogic Solutions, Michelin Mobility Intelligence, the National Road Safety Foundation, Nationwide, Qualcomm, Responsibility.org, Smart Start, State Farm, Uber, Waymo and Zoox.

A detailed meeting agenda is available on the GHSA website. Reporters should contact Adam Snider for press credentials. Many general session and workshop speakers will be available for interviews onsite in Indianapolis.
