States that have laws to govern when ignition interlock devices may be removed from drunk driving offenders’ vehicles have significantly lower rates of repeat driving under the influence (DUI) offenses than states which do not. Those are the main findings of a new study recently released by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), a nonprofit organization representing state highway safety offices, that addressed measures to help reduce the number of drunk driving repeat incidents.

According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, 50% of all traffic fatalities in the United States occur on rural roadways, despite only 19% of Americans living in a rural area.

The Iowa Department of Transportation is one of five states to receive funding from GHSA and the National Road Safety Foundation to prevent drowsy driving in 2019. With the funds, the Department plans to use virtual reality and gamification to spread the message.

Iowa has been a forerunner in combating drowsy driving for years. In 2017, a grant from GHSA and the National Road Safety Foundation helped the state's Zero Fatalities program expand its efforts and amplify the anti-drowsy driving message.
