The public can now learn details about every impaired driving arrest and crash that happens in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has made public a tool that was previously just for law enforcement. The map-based Driving While Impaired (DWI) Dashboard shows crashes and arrests related to impaired driving.

Michael Hanson, Governor’s Representative (GR) and Director of the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety, was elected to serve as Chair of the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) Executive Board at the organization’s 2024 Annual Meeting held last month in Indianapolis. Hanson will serve a one-year term for GHSA, the national nonprofit association of state and territorial highway safety offices (SHSOs) that address behavioral traffic safety issues.

A new grant for the Minnesota Department of Public Safety is hoping to address trends associated with distracted driving. Their Office of Traffic Safety says distracted driving contributes to an average of nearly 30 deaths and 150 life-changing injuries a year across the state.

Rochester, Minnesota is located in Olmsted County and is the third-largest city in the state. Over the past decade, approximately 40 pedestrians and bicyclists have been hit by drivers every year in Rochester. Although these incidents account for only 2.3% of all crashes in the city, they result in 30% of all fatal injuries.

GHSA has partnered with Michelin Mobility Intelligence to provide $300,000 in competitive grants to three states – California, Minnesota and Washington – for advanced traffic safety data collection and analysis that can help make roads safer.

Officials at the Department of Public Safety are so fed up with increased speeding on state roads — and its resulting high death toll — that they are planning to carry out an education and enforcement campaign that will last the entire summer.

Amid a recent surge in traffic deaths and dangerous driving behaviors, the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) has updated the Policies and Priorities that guide the organization’s work to prevent traffic crashes, injuries and deaths on U.S. roads.

GHSA has awarded grants totaling $75,000 from the National Road Safety Foundation to State Highway Safety Offices in CO, KY and MN to work with community-based groups representing underserved populations to provide safe youth mobility options like walking, biking or riding a scooter.
