$10K in Rideshare Credits Available to Marylanders New Year's Eve
Rideshare credits totaling $10,000 will be available to Marylanders on New Year’s Eve night and throughout part of the morning on New Year’s Day.
Every state has laws dealing with alcohol-impaired driving and drug-impaired driving. But unlike the laws for drunk driving, those that address drugged driving are nuanced, difficult to enforce and prosecute and vary substantially by state.
In addition to general impairment laws, there are two basic laws that states tend to use when addressing drug-impaired driving:
18 states have zero tolerance or non-zero per se laws for marijuana.
NOTE: GHSA does not compile any additional data on drug-impaired driving laws other than what is presented here. A compilation of state marijuana laws is available via the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and information on marijuana-impaired driving laws is available from the National Alliance to Stop Impaired Driving (NASID). For more information, consult the appropriate State Highway Safety Office.

Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New Mexico and Texas received a total of $95,000 in grant funds and Uber ride credits to support initiatives that help prevent impaired driving this holiday season.
Texas is on the short list of states that received a grant aimed to help cut down on drunk or drugged driving this holiday season. The Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) has partnered with Uber to award several states grants that will support initiatives to help prevent impaired driving.

When cities shut down at the start of the pandemic, streets were emptier. There was more speeding, more drinking and driving, and less seatbelt-wearing. Deaths and serious injuries spiked for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike.
Less traffic-focused law enforcement was another factor, said Jonathan Adkins, the executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association. “People speed because they can get away with it,” Adkins said.
Jonathan Adkins, executive director of the Governors Highway Safety Association, called it “extremely disappointing” that fatalities have continued to increase during the pandemic after three years from 2017 to 2019 when they decreased.
More police departments across Indiana now have access to a new tool to test potential drugged drivers, and the program aims to expand across the country.
