Intoxalock sponsored research with GHSA to examine whether requiring requiring convicted drunk drivers to have zero violations while an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) is installed in their vehicle before their IID can be removed, a requirement known as compliance-based removal (CBR), will correlate with a reduction in alcohol recidivisim. CBR is often codified as part of a state's impaired driving law.
The resulting report, released in 2023, found that alcohol-impaired driving recidivism rates were lower in two states with CBR statutes, compared with two states without CBR statutes. While there are several factors that can affect drunk driving recidivism, the data indicate that CBR requirements can be a promising tool to address these high-risk drivers and that states without these laws should consider implementing them.

Each state sets their own criteria, regulations and rules around the process for installing and maintaining an IID. Intoxalock state experts are available to help clients understand the timeline of their IDD requirement every step of the way.
