2025 AASHTO Safety Summit and Peer Exchange

AASHTO
October 28 - 30, 2025 New Orleans, LA

Join the AASHTO community for the 3rd annual Safety Summit, hosted by the Committee on Safety.

This event will provide a forum for:

  • Exchanging information and ideas on safety practices among leadership-, managerial-, and practitioner-level representatives of state departments of transportation.
  • Discussing evolving strategies for addressing safety issues related to all elements of a safe transportation system.
  • Collaborating across the state DOT and roadway lifecycle as well as with external partners to work toward common safety goals.

The Summit will present a diverse and practical program that highlights AASHTO President Garrett Eucalitto’s emphases on safer communities, safer road users, and safer workers. Each session of the Summit will be designed to incorporate the event objectives, with a primary format of interaction and conversation among participants, presenters, panelists, and moderators. There will be a mix of plenary and concurrent sessions.

We will offer a few sessions in a new format to allow participants to interact in a small group or an individual level in a more structured format than the standard networking meals and reception. Stay tuned for more on this!

As with the previous two Summits, Day 1 will focus on higher-level policy, organizational, and collaboration frameworks, with the intent of sharing notable state practices and discussing challenges with implementing safety initiatives. The sessions will provide opportunities for discussion and engagement for all participants. The day will end with a networking reception.

Days 2 and 3 (ending at noon on Day 3) of the Summit will continue sharing of notable state practices; discussions on experiences, successes, and challenges; and developing plans for continued collaboration. These conversations will be focused more at the program- and practitioner-levels.

The Summit is the Committee on Safety in-person annual meeting.

Two workshops will be held in conjunction with the Summit:

  • Wednesday evening: AASHTOWare Safety by Numetric – Alternative Design Tool
  • Thursday afternoon: NCHRP 17-114: Integrated Strategies for Managing Excessive Travel Speed to Improve Safety Performance

This year we will also continue the poster networking reception to allow states further opportunities to show off the safety work they have been doing. More information will be available shortly.
